Warum ist das neue 3D-Mario für Wii U kein Super Mario Galaxy 3, sondern „nur“ ein Nachfolger von Super Mario 3D Land? Eigentlich leicht zu beantworten: Super Mario 3D Land verkaufte sich besser als Super Mario Galaxy.

Mario-Erfinder bekräftigte gegenüber Game Informer, dass die Verkaufszahlen nicht der einzige Grund seien. Stattdessen habe man sicher überlegt, wie man ein Super Mario-Spiel möglicht vielen Leuten zugänglich machen könne. Indem man die Spielkonzepte von Galaxy und New Super Mario Bros. kombinierte, entstand 3D Land. Mit dem Ergebnis war man sehr zufrieden, weshalb man das Konzept auf der Wii U weiterführen wolle.

But, in fact, what we really try to do is look at, "What is the easiest way for people to play the Mario games?" […] What we tried to do with Super Mario 3D Land, was try to create a Mario game that was set in a 3D world that fell somewhere between the openness of the Galaxy games and the sidescrolling of the new Super Mario Bros. games to create a 3D Mario game that a wider array of people could play. And we felt that, with Super Mario 3D Land, we managed to achieve that. So, what we wanted to do was extend that broader appealing 3D Mario game to Wii U in a way that allow more people to experience it. That's what we chose for Super Mario 3D World this time.

Der derzeitige Fokus liegt also darauf, ein Super Mario zu entwickeln, dass eine möglichst breite Zielgruppe erreicht – in Anbetracht der derzeitigen Lage der Wii U sehr verständlich. Eine eventuelle Rückkehr zu Super Mario Galaxy schloss Miyamoto in der Zukunft aber nicht aus:

3D World setzt seinen Fokus auf den Mehrspielermodus. Dass man in Zukunft wieder eher Einzelspieler-orientierte Mario-Spiele herausbringen wird, hält Miyamoto für wahrscheinlich:
